Big shout outs to the Inland Northwest’s guide to outdoor recreation!

In the article (you can read, by clicking the image, below) Jon Jonckers, addresses the growing trend of mobile technology assisting those submerging themselves in the great outdoors!

Gravity Jack received a head nod, as one of the leaders in innovation for active outdoor mobile technology, and our CEO, Luke Richey, addresses a few thoughts on the impact that augmented reality (AR) and mobile software can have. From GPS uses, to analyzing the best and safest route up a rockface, augmented reality is here to the rescue, and…of course, we love the media attention!

As if Starbucks, Amazon, and a number of other companies releasing augmented reality apps this month isn’t enough to convince you we’re coming up in the world, just before Thanksgiving, yet another huge stride was made within the world of augmented reality, and it’s sure to further blur the lines, between the possible now…versus the future. We’re proud to say it’s happening right here, in our home state, too.

You may have heard about interest within the augmented reality world, regarding the future of eyewear, and how glasses will soon become a valid option for viewing augmented reality space. You may have also seen one of the Terminator films, and wondered if, during your lifetime, augmented vision would be an option. Well, we’re here to say, you can go ahead and move those thoughts from wonders…to expectations.

Last week, some information was posted on research being done in the realm of contact lenses, and these aren’t your typical 1-800-CONTACT lenses. A research team, led by Babak Praviz of the University of Washington, has designed and effectively (and healthily) tested contact lenses, able to display pixel information, while being comfortably worn.

Basically, “by George, they’ve done it.”

Here’s a photo of the lens, and the lens in action…and just in case you’re grossed out, that’s not a bad case of pink eye…it’s a rabbit’s eye:

(photo: Institute of Physics)

The lenses, that were tested on the eyes of several bunnies, were worn comfortably and able to effectively display a pixel, as shown in the image. The lenses receive information, as well as their power, wirelessly, allowing them to be worn, free of any kind of attached hardware.

While the research team argues that there are already uses for contact lenses able to display one pixel, the obvious question is, “What’s next?”

So, how long until we see this kind of thing?

It’s hard to say. Seeing it to this extent is obviously a bit further down the line; regardless, we’re excited about the research and forward movement in an industry that is sure to change our lives, every day. Feel free to sound off below, and let us know what your gut reaction is.

Check out the full article on the lenses, here.

Well, it’s the time of year that we are all encouraged to stop (or at least slow down enough to think) and consider what we’re thankful for. Here at Gravity Jack, that’s a lot to ask. We have so much to be thankful and excited for, that, well…to be honest, we can’t really put it in to words.

When our company started, two years ago, we were 5 employees strong, with a vision of bringing augmented reality (AR) in to everyday life. Now, with a bit of experience, and a much bigger staff, that vision has only been strengthened and further defined. It’s no longer just a vision, either; in those two years, that vision has become a true reality.

We’d like to think that it was all done, thanks to our badass CEO, our classy and organized COO, our genius director of development, our visionary creative director, our charismatic sales staff, our lifeline of an executive assistant, and our elite backbone of the best developers in the world…and for a significant portion, it is. The truth is, however, that if we’re honest with ourselves, we would not have the opportunities we’ve experienced this year, without a lot of other people. People like Steve Jobs, leading technology to a place where this kind of vision is possible. People like our families who, in their dedication, support us in our dedication. People like you; the fans of both augmented reality and a company who seeks to push the envelope of what’s expected. Ultimately, we can’t forget the big guy upstairs who has continuously handed us epic win, after epic win.

It’s a team effort, and the team is far bigger than just the list in payroll. So, we here at Gravity Jack would like to take a second to thank you for all the support, and express our excitement for what, this time next year, we’ll be able to add to the list. If you find yourself here in the states this weekend, enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, and know that while we might be the most powerful, good-looking, humble, and all-around awesome company the world has ever seen…we’re thankful for the support.

We leave you with this photo, expressing our thanks:

Here’s a new video from us, here at Gravity Jack, showcasing a practical (and pretty awesome) application for augmented reality (AR) that we have been working to develop. Augmented reality has already become headliner for the “future of technology” show, and much of this support is due to one, simple fact: Augmented Reality drops jaws.

Any time someone uses AR for the first time, regardless of what they’ve been told, how many videos they’ve seen, or how well they think they understand the concept, they leave the experience as a fan, and want more. It is for this reason that the all-star developers at Gravity Jack are constantly working to keep up with all the new, innovative uses for augmented reality. (When your industry niche is being the hands-down best, it’s something that is mandatory.)

The video showcases one of our office printers. What makes this short video (about a printer, nonetheless) exciting is the sheer possibility that pours from this kind of production, in the future. Go ahead and have a look at the short video, before we explain how you’ll, without a doubt, have this stuff in your house sooner than you think.

According to Shawn Poindexter, Director of Development here at Gravity Jack, uses for augmented reality that have been considered (by other studios) to be futuristic, are closer than you think.

“Augmented reality is often known by its ‘wow’ factor,” admits Poindexter, “but, a place where (augmented reality) will be getting into, very soon, is guide development and demos.”

In the future, Gravity Jack looks to use our patented AR technology to make information, regarding product development, guides, demos, and quality control much more efficient.
As for how it works, we’ll explain:

First, the app is looking to see if it recognizes anything that we have programmed it to. Once it recognizes the marker, it can tell, based on the size and location of the marker, where the printer is in the view. The app is programmed to already know the internal dimensions and parts, so at this point, it is able to overlay the 3-dimensional parts, created by our developers, on top of what you’re seeing. Now, they can be animated, moved, and used to display anything you could do, with the actual printer, without consequence.

The concept makes sense, but its implication for the future does not stop with our printer.

“In the future, augmented reality could reduce error,” Poindexter continues, “and in the event an error occurs, correct them before causing future mistakes.”

Take, for example, a tutorial on how to change the air filter in your car:

Anyone, using AR, could be led, step by step, through the simple process, in a matter of minutes. The demo could highlight the part to be moved, and recognize when it had been done, then directing the user with the next, correct step.

Are you starting to get the picture? The ramifications for the future are widespread and have the opportunity to affect every aspect, of every industry.

We’re just stoked we’re the ones bringing it to you.

As you know from our previous blog, the month of November means birthday, here at Gravity Jack. We just turned two, and if you haven’t stopped by our birthday blog, be sure to check it out, but here’s an exclusive, behind the scenes look, at some of the festivities that went down.

In celebration of the two years that Gravity Jack has spent, kickin’ ass and takin’ names, we ordered a cake, and threw a bit of a party. Using Gravity Jack swag (a little augmented reality trick called “natural feature tracking”), the team surprised the office with a cake, in a way only we could: one where the only candles were augmented. We were able to, not only see the candles explode out of the cake, but also blow out the candles (using the iPad’s microphone), in true celebratory fashion. Check out the video, below, to see our augmented reality party!

All people appearing in the video are real employees, doing all of our own stunts.

A huge thanks to our buddy Austin, at Sure Shot Video, for bringing this video (and the party) to you.
