INTERACTIVE PLACEMAT
Within the Interactive Placemat world, users explore a 3D map where each stop brings a new gaming opportunity that includes games based on age-old classics with a Kraft-Heinz-themed twist such as Space Invaders and pop a shot. By leveraging augmented reality, these games took place on the tabletop right within the restaurant! The development of the Interactive Placemat mobile app, Gravity Jack, provided KraftHeinz and their partner restaurants a futuristic spin on traditional placemats that are fun for the whole family.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
Gravity Jack began the project by designing a set of print placemats that featured traditional games and customized characters alongside KraftHeinz branding. Designed into the placemat is text that encourages users to download the Interactive Placemat mobile application from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The next step was developing custom computer vision technology so that any device with the application downloaded can recognize the placemat by scanning it with a mobile device’s camera.
Once the app is downloaded, users quickly discover that this is nothing like the traditional placemat they’ve become accustomed to over the years. Scanning a placemat unlocked an augmented reality-based 3D gaming world where each stop on the map provided a new gaming opportunity. Each game was developed by Gravity Jack and featured a KraftHeinz theme that included the ability to color digital 3D characters, fling vegetables into boiling pots of water, and more! Be sure to watch the video below to see how Gravity Jack was able to seamlessly bring augmented reality into the casual dining experience!

The Goal
Instead of handing families dining out a box of crayons and a typical placemat that can be drawn on, KraftHeinz wanted to engage customers through technology.

Gravity Jack’s Solution
Design a set of print placemats that can bring traditional games and customized characters to life when scanned with a mobile divide.

The Result
A dynamic mobile application for iOS and Android devices uses augmented reality technology to unlock a 3D world of games and characters by scanning a series of custom printed placemats distributed within KraftHeinz partner restaurants.
